Winter Issue 2023

Featured Article

Did you know that anxiety is the number one mental illness worldwide for humans? It can affect creatures, too. Birds can pluck out their feathers, withdraw, scream, exhibit excessive startle responses, hypervigilance, or tremoring. Dogs, cats, and pet rodents may show their anxiety through increased vocalization, inappropriate elimination (urination, defection, or urine marking), and destructive and/or repetitive behaviors such as pacing, panting, drooling, or excessive grooming. The entire kit and kaboodle may overeat, undereat, or exhibit digestive problems. Anxiety can show up after the holidays when the toll they took shows up. It may even show up through cellular memory. Point to Ponder

Anxiety rarely solves a problem. It is guaranteed to make you miserable.
—Old Proverb

Creative concern can help you solve a problem. Anxiety? Unlikely. How many times have you laid awake at night rehearsing a sticky problem? Restless, anxious, worried, afraid of the outcome? Contrast that with imagining the worst-case scenario and then thinking constructively and positively about alternatives. For every problem, there is a solution—even if it takes a while for you to recognize it. How many times did the worst-case scenario actually materialize? Winston Churchill reportedly was a resolute worrier. When Churchill was on his deathbed, someone asked about his overall life. Churchill replied that his life had been full of trouble and difficulties—most of which had never happened!
