Riddles are word games or jokes framed as a question or statement couched in deliberately puzzling terms. As one dictionary put it, riddles must be phrased in such a way that some ingenuity is required for elucidation of the answer or meaning. They are designed to prompt you to view things from outside the box or at the very least from another angle.
Riddles may have originated a thousand-plus years ago in England. At any rate, they are something of a conundrum and require some thought to solve. As such, they qualify as a type of Brain Aerobic Exercise. You may want to think of them as a type of mental jig-saw and look for that one piece or idea that will pull everything together in a new way.
The goal is to challenge your brain and stimulate it to perceive things in a new way. If a solution doesn't immediately pop into mind, think about it for a day or two before you look up the answer.
