Daffynytions
Daffynytions are humorous and non-traditional definitions of English words. You can think of them as a type of pun, the reinterpretation of an existing word because it sounds like another word (or group of words), regardless of the way in which it is spelled.
There are a variety of spellings for the label itself. According to Wikipedia, a subclass of daffynition is the goofinition, which relies strictly on literal associations and correct spellings (e.g., lobster – a weak tennis player).
I consider daffynytions to be a form of Brain Aerobic Exercises. They can challenge your brain to connect the “sound” of an English word with a rather off-the-wall (and sometimes humorous) definition.
Here are a couple examples to get you started:
- Protein – In favor of youth (pro-teen)
- Dandilion – A fashionable big cat
Take your time and try to match each set of Daffynytions completely before you look up my solutions. Remember, the goal is to challenge your brain in a new way. That’s what helps to age-proof your brain!
