Article

It’s been an interesting year in relation to influenza viruses. We have not seen the last of them, either. As yet another flu season arrives like clockwork, (and this time colored with concerns about H1N1 Influenza), check out my article entitled, “Fighting the Flu.” The life you save may be your own.!

Adventures of the Littlest Dolphin contains seven stories about the spinner dolphins, indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands. The stories are designed to stimulate active mental picturing and hone intelligent/creative memory. They are enjoyed by persons of almost any age.

Both books are available on Amazon.com (multiple copies can be ordered at a discount from Realizations Inc).  Use them for your holiday presents!

Favorite Author

Edwin Friedman is one of my all-time favorite authors. You may be familiar with some of his books (e.g., Friedman’s Fables, Generation to Generation). A book he was working on at the time of his death has been published posthumously. You may want to pick up a copy. As always, this former rabbi fills each page with comments and ideas that stimulate my brain—and that are applicable to leadership in your personal life as well as to leadership in a plethora of organizations. The title is: “A Failure of Nerve – Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix.” You might even be able to pick up a used copy on amazon.com.

Q & A

Q. A friend of mine overheard you remark “Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself.” Whatever do you mean by that comment?

Answer...

Q. My 26-year-old daughter is dating a young man who has made some comments that we think are demeaning to her. For example, she mispronounced a word and he sneered and said, “You won’t get far in life when you can’t even say words correctly.” Another time when she wasn’t leaving the restaurant as quickly as he wanted to her, he snarled (my interpretation), “Just get your fat ass in the car.” We seem to see less and less of her and we’re scared for her. What do you think?

New Recipes

Figuring out how to fix myself nutritious and appetizing meals while I pushed the “walker” around the kitchen was an interesting challenge. Fortunately, Sharlet Briggs, my business partner and co-author of several books, made it her job to keep plenty of food available in my kitchen!

With a frontal right brain lead I find it difficult to eat the same type of food two meals in a row. While I can do it, I’d rather not! The upshot of searching for nutritious variety that was “easy to prepare” was several new recipes. Here are two of them, plus one:

Point to Ponder

There comes a point in your life when you realize:

  • Who matters
  • Who never did
  • Who won't anymore
  • And who always will

So, don't worry about people from your past. There's a reason they didn't make it to your future.

Yes, I realize this is a bit tongue-in-cheek. However, one of the biggest holiday seasons of the year is right upon us. With all the pluses it can provide, each year sees an increase in weight gain, money mismanagement, physical and mental illness, depression, addictive behaviors, suicide, friend and family conflict, and you name it. Contributors are many—including unhelpful expectations about your role and what you “should” do in relation to others rather than concentrating on what is functional and optimum for you.

During my convalescence from hip replacement surgery, I had an opportunity to realize “who always will matter” all over again. At the risk of leaving someone’s name out, I’ll just say that YOU know who you are. What a lesson in trust and in learning how to receive, which is, after all, just the other side of giving.

Read this rather clever quote again. Be serious about life and avoid taking this holiday season too seriously. Above all, when people de-select themselves from your company or your life, move on graciously. It actually may be a gift for both of you. With the right attitude (e.g., living the 20:80 Rule), you may avoid some distress—undesirable stress....

Book Publishing

Several of you have written to ask for a contact that can help you prepare a manuscript for publishing and to get the book listed on amazon.com. Dave Eastman’s company is the one I utilize for preparation of the PDF and all that behind-the-scenes work. You can contact him directly for prices and time frames:
