Flashpoint—You Can Raise Yours

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION

Three components must be present in order to have fire: a combustible substance, oxygen, and heat. Fire can be life saving or it can be life destroying. Many of us are familiar with terms that describe situations when fire erupts undesirably. Two of these are:

  • Spontaneous combustion: the self-ignition of combustible materials through chemical action (e.g., piles of oily rags erupt into flames in an unventilated room during the heat of summer)
  • Flashpoint: the lowest temperature at which vapors above a volatile combustible substance ignite in air when exposed to flame.

This seminar is designed to help us learn to use the natural phenomena of spontaneous combustion and flashpoint to our advantage. Each one of us has a flash point¾the point at which we spontaneously ignite into action. Some of the complex constellation of factors that push us toward appropriate action or inappropriate reaction (e.g., erupting into action that is out of proportion to the situation at hand) are discussed. These factors can include learned patterns of behavior, unhealed woundedness, a failure to live a high-level-wellness lifestyle, and inappropriate expectations (ours as well as those of others), to name just a few. Strategies for raising our flashpoint are included.

SUGGESTED TIME FRAME

Approximately 45-60 minutes per session.

TYPICAL AUDIENCE

Audiences that are interested in understanding why we sometimes react out of proportion to a specific situation and what we can do to raise our own individual flashpoint.

SEMINAR OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the seminar, participants should be able to:

  • Define the terms: spontaneous combustion and flash point
  • List the three components necessary to create fire
  • Describe three factors that coalesce to create our personal flashpoint
  • List five strategies for raising our own individual flashpoint
