How to manage loss effectively
Growing up most people learn how to acquire but not how to lose. The survivor syndrome differs dramatically from preparing for your own demise (e.g., Kubler-Ross model). Learn how to retain your memories without the sting of the emotional pain. Use the strategies presented in Taylor's Grief Recovery Pyramid model to identify, grieve, recover from, and move beyond your losses. Rather than allowing losses to keep you stuck, use what you learn to help you more forword successfully.
SEMINAR DESCRIPTION
Loss is the experiencing of losing something and it encompasses much more than death. Defining loss more globally can help us to recognize the need for grief recovery. Grief is a natural response to loss. It can be defined simply as intense emotional suffering related to a loss, misfortune, injury, or evil of any type. It can also be described as conflicting feelings that are experienced following any major change to a familiar state of affairs. Unresolved loss or unhealed grief from the past can accumulate and can increase the intensity of our reaction to a present experience of loss. Males and female tend to approach loss and grief recovery from differing perspectives and these differences can negatively impact relationships if not understood and managed appropriately. We all experience loss and we can recover from our losses. Effective recovery doesn't just happen on its own but it is a process that can be learned.
There can be a vast difference between the grieving process useful in preparation for one's own death and grief recovery that is effective for the survivors of loss. The Kubler-Ross work has been landmark in helping individuals prepare to die with dignity. The Grief Recovery Pyramid, on the other hand, is designed to help survivors move through grief recovery successfully, even gracefully. Strategies for engaging in effective grief recovery are included as well as tips for helping children handle loss.
