Travel
is one way to help age-proof your brain. As it experiences
new sights, sounds, smells, and tastes, the neurons grow
new dendrites, which can help to retard the onset of aging
symptoms. Consequently, I make it a point to travel as
much as possible! Recently I had the opportunity to spend
a couple of weeks in Africa and it was one of the best
trips I have ever taken. I jotted down a few reminiscences
to share with you: Africa–Age-Proofing my Brain!

Brain-Q
This
year I am including a puzzle in each Brain Bulletin to
provide additional options for brain stimulation. The
puzzle rules are similar to those of Sudoku, but the puzzle
uses letters of the alphabet rather than numbers. The
object is to complete each grid so that every 3-by-3 box
(there are 9 such boxes in each puzzle), every row, and
every column contain the letters in the puzzle word--used
once only.
In this issue the puzzle word is mindplays,
a reminder that the mind can be very playful and that
the brain needs time to play!
Solutions are available on my web site. [Note: If you
are receiving the text-only version of the email newsletter,
you will need to view the Brain-Q
puzzle online.]
P.S. I’m working on a new type of “find the
words” puzzle for next year, and there will be prizes
for those who find the most words.

Questions & Answers
Q.
I recently attended one of your seminars and heard you
talk about the 20:80 Rule. That’s a good theory,
but do you really think people actually apply what you
share?
A. Yes, some people do, and it can make huge and positive
differences in their lives. As a brain-function educator,
I find that very rewarding, even exciting! It so happens
that I just received an e-mail from a woman who did apply
practically what she had learned and this is what she
shared:
You recently did a series of presentations at an Elderhostel
event at the St. Helena Center for Health that I attended
and enjoyed very much. On my journey back to Alaska I
had an opportunity to practice some of the techniques
that you introduced to the group.
On Thursday I arrived at the Oakland airport around 1:00
p.m. for a 2:30 p.m. flight and discovered that my flight
had been cancelled. My reservations now indicated that
I was to leave Oakland at 9:00 p.m. with no connections
in Seattle. That clearly was not going to work for me.
After some searching, the reservation agent found a flight
leaving San Jose at 2:15 p.m. with a connecting flight
in Seattle.
The shuttle van picked me up and I asked the driver if
he could get me to San Jose in time for a 2:15 flight.
He said that he would try. So I thought of what I had
learned from your presentations: I put on my seatbelt,
took a deep breath, got out my Sudoku puzzles and started
to work on them. The driver looked at me and in an astonished
voice asked, “Why I are you so calm? Most of my
passengers would be highly agitated and/or yelling at
this point in their travels!”
I explained to him about the 20:80 rule, outlined some
of the stress management techniques I had learned, described
how cortisol has a deleterious effect on one's brain and
body and thanked him for doing the best he could to get
me to the San Jose airport on time. I could not ask for
more.
We actually had a very interesting conversation all the
way to the airport, and I learned a lot about business
enterprises that were previously unknown to me. And I
made my flight in San Jose with time to spare. Thank you
for your insights and for sharing such applicable information.
P.S. If you want more information on the 20:80 Rule,
refer to the May-Jun 2007 Brain
Bulletin.

CDs and
DVDs Available
CDs
Studies
have shown that reading stories or listening to stories
being read aloud can stimulate active mental picturing,
a necessary skill for effective brainstorming, problem
solving, imagination, and creativity. This is in contrast
to watching TV and videos that usually involve passive
picturing (processing what other brains have created).
Taylor’s original animal allegories are designed
to help stimulate active mental picturing, develop creativity
and imagination, hone listening skills, and trigger decoding
centers in the brain for the three main sensory systems
(visual, auditory, kinesthetic). For people of any age,
these stories are now available on CD. Read by the author.
DVDs
Originally recorded at 3ABN studios in Illinois, the
VHS masters have been transferred to DVD format. Taylor
presents the information in an easy-to-understand style.
Each topic is presented in from three to eleven 30-minute
segments. Groups from around the world have reported using
these at weekly 1-hour home, school, organizational, or
community gatherings. The host shows one 30-minute segment
and continues with a 30-minute discussion, which helps
to make the information practical to everyday living.
The following week the host shows the second 30-minute
segment for that topic, followed by a general discussion,
and so on.

Point to Ponder
Those
who do not create their future deserve the future they
get. --Old Proverb
When I read this quote, the e-mail from the woman in
Alaska immediately came to mind. Many people are exposed
to information about the 20:80 Rule. This woman believed
she could practically apply what she had learned. Consequently
she took positive charge of the 80%. In his book, The
Power of Belief, Author Ray Dodd explains that in
order to achieve anything, you must first decide that
it is possible, that you are capable of it. At some level
we ALL create our future. We do this both by what we choose
to believe and do and what we choose not to believe or
do. The first question is, “What do YOU believe
you can do?” The second question is, “Are
you DOING it?”
