New Article
There
has been a great deal of change in the world lately--from
Iraq to Bird Flu and everywhere in between. It even
seems there have been more changes in my life than
usual, including a small remodeling job at home
(at the house, not on me), a trip to Southern California
to attend my Uncle Ed Cafferky's memorial
service, and the marriage of my cousin's daughter
in Canada. All this, plus a request to address the
topic of change with a community group of young
adults, triggered my new article: Chim-Chiminey
Change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q.
Tell me more about the relative expenditures of
brain energy.
A. Nothing in life is free. You always give something
up to get something. And the bottom line, the basic
medium of exchange, is energy. You pay—not
with money, or talent, or high-tech commodities.
You pay with energy. PET Scans have shown that the
brain expends differing amounts of energy depending
on the type of activity it is engaged in, and whether
or not the activity matches its own biochemical
advantage. People tend to use less energy second
for second when engaged in activities that match
their brain's biochemical advantage. Using
money as a metaphor, the differences in energy expenditure
may be as significant as pennies on the dollar!
The question becomes, therefore: are you expending
your energy in energy-intensive or energy-efficient
ways?

Checkout
the Selected Brain Facts
section. Peruse it to help achieve your age-proofing
30 minutes per day of challenging mental exercise
while learning more about the brain and its amazing
functions. Be sure to spend a few minutes a day
reading aloud. PET Scans have shown that greater
amounts of the brain are activated when you read
aloud as compared to when you read silently.

Point to Ponder
Unless you change your direction, you are likely
to end up where you are going. --An Old Chinese
Proverb
That's great news if you know where you want
to end up and are moving in that direction. It's
not-so-good news if you don't! Picture positive
outcomes, create a mental map that will help you
achieve those positive outcomes, and follow it.
Do something every day to help you move in the desired
direction. You can do it!
