Seminars

calendar My calendar is usually clear of weekend seminars from the middle of November through December. This year I'm getting to do a bit of extra traveling: a week in Turkey with Noel, Pat, and Susie Shanko; and a week in Japan and Korea with colleague Sharlet Briggs (visiting her son Dustin). Who knows? I may uncover some interesting brain-function tidbits on those trips!

Sign up now to attend The Brain Program at the Center for Health at St. Helena Hospital on February 13-14, 2004. Spend Valentine's Day with me learning more about your brain and how to enhance all your relationships. Bring a friend and learn more about his/her brain, too!

Travel Update

Ireland This is a reminder that I'm heading to Ireland July 12, 2004, and you just might want to meet me there! Sponsored by Educational Opportunities Tours, this trip offers 10 exciting and educational days with castles, abbeys, cathedrals, and a stop at Waterford! Request a brochure by e-mail or snail mail.

Selected References

As is often the case in life, some things turn out to be more labor intensive than originally expected! Developing the Selected References section on my website, for example. The good news is that this resource is already being utilized as envisioned: a graduate student in Canada to finish up a research project; college students in Michigan, Tennessee, California, and Hawaii to "write papers."

You don't have to be enrolled in a formal study program to take advantage of this resource. Pick a topic that interests you. Beg, buy, or borrow some of the books and obtain your "age-proofing 30 minutes per day of challenging mental exercise" while learning more about the brain.

New Book

My new book, coauthored with Dr. Gene Brewer and Michelle Nash: MindWaves--How to Use Less Brain Energy to Avoid Burnouts and Better Connect with Those Around You!--was released October 31. This book presents brain-function information in an easy-reading style.

MindWaves is designed to help you get to know your own unique brain--that mysterious, complex, and fascinating organ; that most intricately organized and densely populated expanse of biological real estate in the world--and identify the advantages that it alone possesses. Contains 200+ pages, a brain-energy activity evaluation, and selected bibliography.

You may obtain a copy by calling The Concerned Group, Inc at 1-800-447-4332 or accessing their website at www.areasonfor.com/Products/OtherProducts.aspx.

MindWaves is available through this website and will eventually be available through www.amazon.com. And speaking of the holidays, Brain Benders makes great stocking stuffers. While supplies last they're available at half price.

News Note

Memory is perhaps more fluid and unpredictable than some would like to believe. Some memories we recall are true, some are partly true, and some are downright untrue. Researchers now believe that it is quite easy to plant false memories.

Because of this it is extremely important (especially when we are eliciting information from others) to be very careful about the way in which we ask questions.

Elizabeth F. Loftus, UC Irvine, has written several articles about false memory. Her homepage address is www.seweb.uci.edu/faculty/loftus/

Point to Ponder

George Eliot It's never too late to be who you might have been. --George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans)

...if you invest the time and energy to figure out who you are innately, I might add! This time of the year can offer increased opportunities to observe expectations that others have for us and/or that we have for ourselves. Remember "what you don't know you don't know" can sabotage personal growth.

There's no time like the present to take another step toward being real, identifying your innate giftedness, and living authentically. Enjoy the process!
